Olympia’s Capitol Lake is a gem in the state capitol’s downtown…from a distance. This summer it is half-covered with green algae. And because of invasive New Zealand mud snails, it has been off limits to swimmers, boaters, and any other use for years. It’s still popular with waterfowl, however. You can read more about the history of this estuary-turned-pond at deschutesestuary.org.
