Put Me in the Zoo (for an afternoon)

One of my favorite books as a kid was Put Me in the Zoo, and I joked about that on my way to the Point Defiance Zoo today. The premise, of course, is that this odd leopard who can juggle his own spots wants a place in the zoo, where life is good. For some endangered or rare animals, or others who are too injured to survive in the wild, this is true. And zoos have come a long way from the small cages and bars that used to define animals’ habitat. The Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium is modest, but clearly popular with the families and kids there today in the late summer warmth. Some images:
