Memorial day 2007. An observance is taking place in the state capitol rotunda in Olympia, Washington — a cavernous space photographed by everyone and their tour guide. But I’m there anyway, up on one of the upper levels, looking down at the crowd milling around. Truth be told, I don’t recall whether it was a band playing the national anthem, or someone leading the pledge of allegiance, but suddenly there was order to the crowd below, which I tried to capture with a dynamic diagonal.
